Most of the time, you will find data to be downloaded in different formats, such as spreadsheets (Google or Excel), .csv, .json, or access it through an API (application programming interface). You probably must access a database to obtain the data you require for your project. Or use a combination of all the sources mentioned to gather the required data.
Spreadsheets
(Google or Excel)
These familiar file formats store data in rows and columns, making them ideal for smaller datasets or sharing data for basic analysis.
CSV
(Comma-Separated Values)
A simple text file where each line represents a data record, with values within each record separated by commas. Its simplicity and compatibility with various software make it a popular choice for data exchange.
JSON
(JavaScript Object Notation)
This human-readable format structures data using key-value pairs, making it flexible for exchanging data between applications.
API Access
APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) act as intermediaries, allowing programmatic data retrieval from various sources.
Database Querying
For massive or intricate datasets, you might need to directly query a database using specialized languages like SQL (Structured Query Language).
In this particular case, we obtained awarded contracts data from the “Search the contract registry” from the Yukon Government’s official site.
We downloaded the data from all the variables available on the website from the fiscal years 2021-22 to 2023-24 in a CSV file.
